Every year we try hard to avert the cycle of making and breaking our New Year’s resolutions, but this year we want to help you stick to your goals! We have compiled our top five tips to support you so you achieve your resolutions this year.
Tip 1: The 21-day rule
You’ve heard it over and over again, but many studies suggest that it takes at least 21 days to form a new habit and we agree. Persevering through the first few weeks is the hardest but it is the most vital! Once you get into a habit (or if you are trying to break a habit), your new behaviour is likely to become routine and natural for you to complete for the rest of the year.
Tip 2: Have a friend motive you
It’s easier to break your resolution when it’s on your own, so we find it helpful to make a commitment with a friend or family member. Friends can offer the support or tough love you need to stick to your goals and make a lasting change in your life. Whether it’s going for a run together or giving up fast food, starting your New Year’s resolution with someone else will give you the motivation and sense of purpose to continue to reach your desired outcome.
Tip 3: Record your progress
Progress happens slowly, so keep track of small victories and acknowledge your hard work along the way. Nothing is too small to record, even if it is just getting out of the office for a 10-minute walk or not biting your nails for a week. Make sure to record it somewhere so you can reflect on your progress.
Tip 4: Adapting is key
Most people struggle to stay on track with their resolutions once temptation is put before them. For example, if you aren’t able to get to the gym, adapt your workout so you can do it during your lunch break or even at your desk at work. Make sure you organise a life / resolution balance so goals are achievable and can fit into your life without changing it drastically.
Tip 5: Treat yourself!
If you have worked hard and managed to accomplish your goals, don’t forget to take the time to treat yourself! It’s important to celebrate your wins along the way and not to stress if you sleep in on the odd occasion or eat that next piece of chocolate. As they say, it’s all about the journey and not the destination.
