How to recover from the Christmas season

Christmas is a festive time of year filled with friends, family, presents and food, so it’s no surprise when your diet goes out the window. To make sure you welcome the New Year with health and wellness, we have gathered some tips to help you detox inside and out.

Diet

After all those sugary treats it’s hard to get back into a regular diet. A poor diet will add stress to your body, which can cause breakouts and that dreaded holiday bulge. While you don’t have to go on a strict detox program, it’s important to make sure you eat meals with a balanced mix of lean proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Foods to focus on are immunity boosters (such as sweet potatoes and mushrooms), foods that will help keep your blood sugars under control (broccoli and spinach) and foods high in magnesium (avocados and almonds). Maintaining a healthy and balanced diet will help your body cope with the post-holiday stress.

Rest

While the excitement of the holidays can keep you up partying late into the night, you should aim for between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. A lack of rest can affect how we function during the day and eventually cause a myriad of health issues. Sleep will help your body recover, which in turn improves your immune system, skin, mood and appetite control.

Mindfulness

While caring for our bodies is important, our minds also need attention. After the buzz of the Christmas season, it’s completely normal for our mental health to take a slight blow. One of the easiest antidotes is to take a simple, old-fashioned walk. Fresh air and light exercise can do wonders for your disposition and wellbeing.

Hydration

As the poet W.H. Auden said, “Thousands of lives have lived but not one without water”. Hydration is invaluable. It helps us maintain concentration, rejuvenates our skin and is essential to our survival. It’s important to remember hydration also helps keep your skin healthy and glowing. Keeping your H2O levels up will help cleanse your system, which your body will thank you for.
